Project Overview
As part of the "Securing Our Water Supply – Quakers Hill to Prospect" program, Sydney Water undertook a significant upgrade of the Quakers Hill Water Resource Recovery Facility (WRRF). The project is central to improving Sydney's water sustainability through increased wastewater treatment capacity and the introduction of purified recycled water into the drinking water supply.
Scope of Works
The comprehensive project involved:
- Expansion of Wastewater Treatment Capacity
Enhancing the facility to manage increased volumes of wastewater from the growing region. - Advanced Wastewater Treatment Processes
Implementation of state-of-the-art technologies to improve the quality of treated effluent at the WRRF. - Construction of a New Purified Recycled Water Plant
A high-tech treatment plant was built incorporating: - Ultrafiltration
- Reverse osmosis
- Advanced oxidation
- Chlorination
The facility has an average treatment capacity of 36 million litres (ML) per day.
Recycled Water Transfer Infrastructure
Installation of new pipeline infrastructure to transport purified recycled water from Quakers Hill WRRF to Prospect Reservoir.
Integration with Prospect ReservoirConstruction of supporting infrastructure at Prospect Reservoir to allow the addition of purified recycled water to Sydney’s water supply.
Technology Demonstration Facility
The Quakers Hill site also includes a demonstration Purified Recycled Water Plant, designed as a testbed for treatment technologies and processes before full-scale deployment.
AVK’s Contribution
AVK played a critical role in supplying and supporting key valve components across the project between 2019 and 2021. This included:
- Valves Supplied:
- 4 × DN1050 Orbinox Knife Gate Valves
- 10 × DN600 Orbinox Knife Gate Valves
- 4 × DN1050 Wouter Witzel Butterfly Valves
- Additional AVK Gate and Swing Check Valves
These high-performance valves were essential for ensuring reliable flow control in both wastewater and purified recycled water systems.
